Yuen Yuen Institute

Yuen Yuen Institute was built in 1950 on the hillside near Lo Wai Village, Tsuen Wan, dedicated to Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. The first 3 characters of the Chinese name of the institute denote the essence of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and the advocacy for the integration and realisation of the teachings of the 3 religions. The arches of the three religions were erected at the entrance of the institute. Pine and cypress are grown on both sides of the steps leading to a square. On the left and the right of the square are 2 traditional-style pavilions for visitors and worshippers to take a rest. At the centre is the main building of the institute, the Great Temple of the Three Religions. Modelled on the architecture of the Temple of Heaven in China, it is the temple where the deities of the three religions are enshrined. The dome of the temple signifies the essence of Taoism: without beginning and end. On the right of the Great Temple of the Three Religions are Oi Yat Pavilion and Lung Wah Building. Next to Oi Yat Pavilion is a huge bonsai with rocks and a small stream. Lung Wah Building is a 2-storey building consisting of a hall of worship and a guest hall. It is elegantly and classically decorated. Further left to the Temple of the Three Religions is Kwan Yam Pond. The institute is an ideal location for costume drama because of its abundant classical buildings and memorial gateways. The other advantage is its isolated location without any high rise building or modern architecture in view. In fact, it has been the much filmed location for TV costume dramas.
