Po Lin Monastery was established in 1924. It is one of the largest Buddhist construction compounds in Hong Kong. It is located at Ngong Ping which is 520 m above sea level. There is a three-layered platform, imitating the design of the Circular Mound Altar of Temple of Heaven in Beijing. A large stone gateway is also located in the open piazza. Buildings and facilities inside Po Lin Monastery are of ancient Chinese building style, including a garden and a lotus pool. Tian Tan Buddha Statue is the world's second tallest, outdoor seated bronze Buddha. It is 34 m high and is connected by a staircase consisting of 268 steps. The circular open plaza under the Buddha provides the view of mountains on Lantau Island and South China Sea.
