Sheung Yiu Folk Museum is situated in Sheung Yiu, Pak Tam Chung, Sai Kung. In the late 19th century, the Wong family of the Hakka ethnical origin, moved from their ancestral home in Bao'an of the Guangdong Province to Sai Kung. The family went to make a living there. They settled in Sheung Yiu and set up a small shop nearby. It provided the villagers, passers-by and travelling tradesmen with a resting place. Later, the Wong family built Sheung Yiu Village where they established their own home and business. Apart from fishing and farming, the Wong family was also engaged in traditional handicraft industries such as the manufacturing of lime bricks and tiles. The family constructed a brick kiln at the shore to manufacture bricks and tiles for building houses. Over a hundred workers were employed in the kilns when Sheung Yiu was at its peak. However, with the introduction of cement, the kiln industry began to decline. In the 1950s, the villagers flocked to the urban areas or went overseas to earn their living. By the 1960s, the whole village was abandoned. In 1981, it was declared to be historical monuments. After restoration undertaken by the Antiques and Monuments Office, the village became a 500 sq m Sheung Yiu Folk Museum, which is now managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
