Chun Kwan Temple worships "Chun Kwan", a commoner surnamed Ng who helped the local government to combat pirates around the Guangdong area during the South Sung Dynasty (1127-1279 AD). To commemorate his heroic act after his death, the emperor bestowed on him the title "Chun Kwan", and people started to worship him as a god. The original Chun Kwan Temple was built about 100 years ago near the waterfront. The temple was relocated to Fung Shue Wo Road to make way for developments in the mid 1980s. Chun Kwan's birthday is on the 15th day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar. The "Chun Kwan Birthday Festival" is however usually celebrated in the early part of the 4th month of the lunar calendar with traditional Cantonese opera performances.
