Tin Hau Temple (Lei Yue Mun)
Characteristic
The Tin Hau Temple in Ma Wan Village, Lei Yue Mun was built in the 18th year of Qing Emperor Qianlong (1753 AD). The temple has once attracted large numbers of pilgrims but has been damaged several times, leaving behind an archway, a tablet, an inscription and an old clock at the scene. The temple was renovated in 1953 and 1986. Walking through the main path leading to the temple, people can see the beautiful scenery of Victoria Harbour. According to legend, Tin Hau, the Heavenly Goddess, was born in the Sung Dynasty (960 - 1279 AD). Her native place was Fujian Province, and her mortal name was Lam Mak-leung. Possessing supernatural power, she saved many people from disasters of the sea. Therefore, she is regarded by the seafaring folks as their Patron Saint.
