The Birthday of Buddha is held on the 8th day of the 4th month of the lunar calendar and has become a public holiday in Hong Kong since 1999. It is a celebration of Sakyamuni Buddha's birthday. Worshippers show their devotion and respect throughout the day by bathing Buddha's statue in major temples and monasteries in Hong Kong. Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island is the hub of activity at this time. Worshippers enjoy Chinese vegetarian dishes cooked by the monks. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in Sha Tin or Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery in Tuen Mun, both in the New Territories, also celebrate the festival.
