Chung Yeung Festival is believed to have originated from a Han Dynasty legend. A soothsayer advised Woon King that he should take his family to a high place for the entire 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar. Upon their return, the Woon family discovered all the living stocks at home were dead. Today, Chung Yeung Festival is a day to respect and remember ancestors. Families journey to the graves of their ancestors to sweep the graves and pay their respects. It is also a day for hiking. Many families head to the hills to picnic during the festival.
