The origin of Basin Banquet can be traced back towards the end of the Southern Sung Dynasty (around 1276 AD) when the emperor and his minister fled to the vicinity of Tuen Mun and Yuen Long to run away from invaders' prosecution. Civilians were pleasantly astonished by the sudden visit of the emperor but they did not have enough containers to serve the feast. Wooden basins came to solution and the dish with different types of food piled up in a basin, layer by layer, has developed into a delicacy on special occasions such as weddings or festivals in the New Territories nowadays.
