"Making offerings to the White Tiger" is a rite seen at Jingzhe, "the Waking of Insects". It is the 3rd of the 24 Chinese solar terms which falls on either March 5, 6 or 7. It is a time when all the insects and animals awaken from their hibernation and start to look for foods. It is believed that the White Tiger, one of the demons, will also start to hunt for human flesh, so people will put pork in the mouth of a tiger figure and pray for safety. "Beating the Vile Character" is a ritual seen all year under the bridge at the junction of Canal Road West and Hennessy Road but it is most popular at Jingzhe. During the process, an old lady will help her customer to write the name of the vile character on a paper man figure and hit it with a shoe. It is believed that this will help to expel the bad luck brought by the vile character.
