Established in 1997, Yuen Po Street Bird Garden occupies an area of 3,000 sq m in Mong Kok. It is bounded by Boundary Street, Embankment Road, Prince Edward Road West and Yuen Po Street, with entrances at Boundary Street and Yuen Po Street. The idea of building the bird garden is originated from the demolition of the bird stalls in Hong Lok Street ("Bird Street"), which was famous for its proliferation of stalls selling pet birds. The bird garden has therefore helped preserve the street's heritage. The traditional "pai lou" (gateway) design is the most notable feature of the bird garden. A series of "pai lou" divide the long and narrow garden plot into different courtyards. The courtyards are flanked on one side by a row of trees and on the other side by bird stalls where bird traders and fanciers can meet and share their fun and experiences. The garden can be best captured during daytime. The granite pavement, the glazed bamboo-shaped ceramic roof tiles and the 200 marble screen carvings on the perimeter walls always bounce off hues of sunlight, making the garden look different. Other impressive features include the giant mural carving at the Boundary Street entrance depicting the gathering of 100 birds.
