Hong Kong City Hall is the first cultural venue established in 1962 in Hong Kong. It is conveniently situated at the commercial centre in Central, within short walking distance of MTR Central Station. The square foyer of the low block is elegantly carpeted in European style. The spacious exhibition hall is fitted with wall panels, adjustable spotlights and flood lights. The City Hall Memorial Garden linking the 10-storey high block and the 3-storey low block was built in memory of the glorious dead who died in the war years between 1941 and 1945. A Roll of Honours and wreaths are placed in the 12-sided Memorial Shrine in the middle of the garden. The staircase linking the Marriage Registry and the garden provides a magnificent backdrop for taking wedding photos. The sunken courtyard has a water strip leading to the Memorial Shrine. There is also a raised platform (known as a dias) located outside the main entrance of the low block at Edinburg Place. Hong Kong City Hall is a Grade I historic building.
