The festival is in memory of Hau Wong, a famous historical character who was revered as a protector of a young emperor in Sung Dynasty. Every year, the residents of remote Tai O village celebrate his birthday on the 6th day of the 6th month in the lunar calendar. The highlight of the festivities is a man's walking over hot coals barefooted in trance. A Hau Wong Temple was built in Kowloon City around 1730 AD. There are Hau Wong Temples in Tung Chung, San Tin and Sha Tin.
