Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok, Lantau Island, came into operation in July 1998 and has been named one of the "Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century". It covers a site area of 1,255 hectares and has 2 runways of 3,800 m in length. Passenger Terminal 1 is about 9 times the size of the former Kai Tak Airport, with a length of 1.27 km. The whole building with a towering arched roof is lined with glasses on four sides and the use of natural light becomes an integral part of the terminal design. Passenger Terminal 1 has a floor area of 570,000 sq m, accommodating 369 check-in counters, passenger information kiosks, etc. The replica of the Farman bi-plane commemorating the first flight in Hong Kong is a feature in the hall. Inside the building is also a shopping mall with over 160 retail shops and 60 food and beverage outlets. The Meeters and Greeters Hall is located in the centre of the Arrivals Hall. Passenger Terminal 2 has been suspended from operation for expansion as part of the Three-runway System project.
