Shing Mun Tunnel
Characteristic
Built in 1990, the Shing Mun Tunnel is part of the Route 5, a 7 km dual trunk road which links Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan and forms part of the New Territories Circular Route that brings the northern part of the New Territories within easy reach of Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi (Lantau Link) and Tuen Mun Highways. The route is divided into 3 sections, namely, the 2 km Shatin approach section maintained by the Shatin New Town Development Office, the 3.5 km Shing Mun section managed by the Highways Department and the westerly 1.5 km Tsuen Wan approach section maintained by the Tsuen Wan New Town Development Office. A bus interchange on the Tsuen Wan side facilitates commuters to access different parts of Tsuen Wan and Shatin areas. The Shing Mun section consists of a tunnel with a 2-lane dual carriageway of 2.6 km in length that holds a traffic capacity of 6,800 per hour. The speed limit for normal traffic is 70 km per hour and 50 km per hour during one-tube-two-way operation. The average temperature inside the tunnel is about 34 degrees Celsius. Unlike other tunnels in Hong Kong, the Shing Mun Tunnel consists of 2 separate tubes which are discontinued by the gorge of the lower Shing Mun River. The 2 tubes are linked by two 100 m concrete bridges, an open space for the beautiful scenery of the Shing Mun Gorge. The Needle Hills Tunnel in the east is 1.6 km while the Smugglers Ridge Tunnel in the west is 1 km long. The administration building of the Shing Mun Tunnel is a piece of modern architecture with a touch of "Gothic" style. A small path behind the administration building leads to the Shing Mun Reservoir.

How to Apply
Apply in writing with information on the location, date, time, duration of filming and synopsis of the film.
Processing time : at least 10 working days.
Fees
$6,870 (basic charge) for the first 4 hours and $1,935 for each subsequent 4-hour block.
Additional fees will be charged for the operational costs of administering the filming activities.
PLI cover
Applicants shall effect a public liability insurance in the sum of $50 million at their own expense in the joint names of the Government of the HKSAR, Chun Wo Tunnel Management Ltd and the company with terms and conditions to be approved by the Tunnel Operator. A copy of the policy should be provided to the Tunnel Manager. Applicants are advised to contact the Tunnel Manager for the insurance requirements.
Remarks
- Film crews should comply with the Road Tunnels (Government) Ordinance and Regulations and the terms and conditions for location filming as set out by the Tunnel Operator. Please contact the Tunnel Manager for the details.
- Applicants should indemnify the Tunnel Operator for all the damage, loss and cost of repairs as a result of the filming.
- Applicants should obtain relevant permits from specific government departments as required.
- In case of emergency, film crews should strictly follow the instructions of the tunnel staff, including stopping of the filming when necessary.
- Film crews should arrange electricity supply on their own.
